Phi Pop is a cannibalistic spirit of Thai folklore that likes to devour human viscera. It is related to the Phi Fa spirit. According to what I know, legends describe Phi Pop as a ghost that can haunt individuals and eat their intestines while they sleep. One traditional legend tells the story of a prince and his servant who switched bodies using magic words, leading to the servant being trapped in an animal’s body and becoming a revenant spirit known as Phi Pop.
Description[]
Village legends suggest that Phi Pop can live inside a sorceress and leave her body during sleep. Before the sorceress dies, the spirit must find a new host by consuming some saliva from her. If Phi Pop successfully haunts someone, it will consume their intestines while they are asleep. One method rumored to get rid of Phi Pop involves calling in a healing dancer who performs a spinning dance to chase away the spirit.
In modern times, there have been reports of Phi Pop causing mysterious deaths in various regions. For instance, in 2007, residents raised funds for an exorcism in Kalasin Province after four villagers died suddenly due to alleged possession by Phi Pop. Additionally, in 2012, sudden deaths in Laos were believed to be caused by Phi Pop.
Phi Pop has been featured in Thai films such as “Ban Phi Pop” and “Lang Phao Phan Khot Phi Pop.” These stories reflect the deep-rooted supernatural beliefs ingrained in Thai culture and entertainment industry. Thai folklore often intertwines morality tales with supernatural elements like ghosts and spirit.
